Setting up a Telos Xstream for IP connections

If you currently use a Telos Xstream for ISDN voiceover sessions, you may know that it is capable of connecting to other Xstream codecs via the internet as well. To do this requires a bit of set up, but once done, will allow you to connect via ISDN and IP in the future. Note: It’s important to know that you must have a static IP address from your ISP to make IP connections with your XStream.

Once you have a static IP, here’s what you need to do to set up your codec:

  • First, be sure you are able to administer your Internet router.
  • Ascertain your Xstream is running at least firmware version 3.0.1, preferably 3.7.
  • Connect your Telos Xstream to your Internet router via an ethernet cable.
  • Connect a personal computer to your Internet router (also recommend via ethernet cable because some routers do not allow remote administration via WIFI)
  • Log into your router and determine the DHCP IP address range, the WAN IP address of the router, the router’s LAN subnet and the DNS server your router is using.
  • Set the IP address of your Xstream to one in the same address scheme as your router but outside the DHCP range running on your router by selecting SYSTEM::IP ADDRESS
  • Set the subnet address of your Xstream to the same subnet your router is operating on by selecting SYSTEM::IP SUBNET
  • Set the gateway address of your Xstream to the same address as the LAN address of your router by selecting SYSTEM::GATEWAY
  • Set the DNS server for your Xstream to either the DNS servers reported on your router’s WAN status page or to the LAN IP address of the router by selecting SYS::DNS SERVER
  • Ascertain the Xstream SIP port is set to 5060 by selecting TEL::SIP PORT
  • Ascertain the Xstream UDP port is set to 9150 by selecting TEL::UDP PORT
  • Open TCP port 5060 for the IP address of the Xstream within your router’s PORT FORWARDING page.
  • Open UDP port 9150 for the IP address of the Xstream within your router’s PORT FORWARDING page.
  • Determine (either via the router web interface WAN status page or by visiting a website like http://www.ipfingerprints.com on the personal computer) what your router’s WAN address is.
  • Set the Xstream to SIP mode by selecting TEL::INTERFACE::ETHERNET (SIP)
  • Set the WAN IP address of the Xstream to the IP address you found on the router WAN status page or ipfinderprints.com by selecting COD::WAN IP (This menu will not be available if the TEL::INTERFACE mode is not in ETHERNET (SIP) )
  • Set the Xstream codec by selecting CODEC::TRANSMIT to MPEG-2 AAC, CODEC::RECEIVE to AUTO, CODEC::BITRATE to 96kbps, CODEC::MODE to mono, CODEC::SAMPLE to AUTO, CODEC::BUFFER to .25 sec.  (This menu will not be available if the TEL::INTERFACE mode is not in ETHERNET (SIP) )
  • Provide a recognizable name for remote units to the Xstream and enter it by selecting CODEC::HOSTNAME .
  • Determine your remote party’s IP address.
  • With the Xstream in ETHERNET (SIP) mode, select DIAL and enter the remote party’s IP address. (An IP address field will not be available if the TEL::INTERFACE mode is not in ETHERNET (SIP) )

Once you’ve completed these steps you should be ready for IP connections. Switching the TEL::INTERFACE mode between ETHERNET (SIP) and ISDN will allow you to make connections via each method, respectively.
