#TalentTuesday with Marisa Blake

Voice Actress Marisa Blake – you may have heard her voice at The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History – very cool for a DC native! Or maybe you’ve heard her narrating children’s books in English or Spanish, or lending her voice to brands such as Estrella Jalisco, YMCA or Atrium Health. When not doing voiceovers, she keeps busy as a mom, an on-camera actress, a drummer, a singer, and works behind the scenes with a video production company capturing live music in-studio and on-stage. We took a few moments to find out more about Marisa in today’s #TalentTuesday interview.

How long have you been working with ProComm?

I started working with Procomm about 2 years ago I think.

What’s your favorite part of voice acting?

I get to work from anywhere in the world with people from all over the world!  I get to PLAY with my voice.  No day is ever the same!

How did you get started in voiceover work?

When I was 13 I started doing on-camera and voiceover work in the DC area,  back when you used to drive to the various studios to work!  The constant rejection was hard for my teenage self.   I just got back into on-camera work 6 years ago and thought I would give Voiceover another go as well. After 5 years, I feel blessed to call it my full time job!

When you’re not behind a hot mic, what do you like to do?

I have three boys.  They keep me pretty busy!  I love building legos, playing board or card games, and making music.  I am a drummer and a vocalist.  I also love dancing!

Favorite album or recording artist(s)?

I have a few but one of my all time favorite singers is Erykah Badu.  I have seen in her concert a few times.  Marc Anthony is also pretty close in the running!

Favorite concert(s) you’ve attended?

Well, aside from Erykah Badu, the first show I ever went to was The Roots.  I just saw them again last year and WOW, they are still incredible live!

What kinds of pets do you have?

We do not have any pets at the moment.  We used to have a bunny named Biscuit.  A sweet Holland Lop.  I miss her still.

What, or who, are you a “closet” fan of (as in, you might be slightly embarrassed to admit it)?

I love Zac Efron…I have also been known to watch Bravo TV.  I may or may not know way too much about the Real Housewives of anywhere.

What is one of your favorite vacations you’ve taken?

I recently took a vacation with my husband.  Just the two of us. We packed up our gear (he’s a guitar player) and rented a house on Folly.  We didn’t go much further than from the beach to our home all week.  We played music, read books, rented bikes, and ate like royalty.  It was extremely relaxing and full of creativity!  Already can’t wait to do it again!

If we looked in your refrigerator, what would we find?

Everything.  Have I mentioned I have three kids?!?  Two are teenagers…so we have to keep the kitchen stocked.  We always have eggs and milk.  Even if there is no winter storm coming.  Breakfast is a favorite meal over here.

What was your first car?

A little 4 speed 1991 Toyota Tercel.  She lasted a good two or three months.

What event do you remember most fondly from high school?

My friends.  I am still very close to many of my friends from high school and although we don’t see each other much, and we don’t talk that often, it is always as if this time never passed.

If you woke up tomorrow as an animal, what animal would you choose to be and why?

A bird.  I’d love to be able to fly!

Do you have any other special talents?

I can create a character voice for most any animate and inanimate object! I also grew up dancing Flamenco.

Favorite ad campaign over the years you’ve heard or seen that does NOT include your voice?

I love the Allstate “Mayhem” commercials.  I think they are clever and do the job!

Dream career if not doing VO work, and could make a living?

I think I’m doing it…
